Discrimination is a serious problem around the world. Everyone
thinks that discrimination should be solved but apparently, everybody unintentionally
discriminates people in society. Although I am Korean, I am going to criticize some
Korean companies due to their extreme discrimination in their work places. I
will not reveal the name of that company but this is from my work experience.
Usually there are three processes that you have to go
through in order for applicants to get hired in the company. First, you need to
file the application second, after they put you into the system, you need to
take the exam for that company. Third, you need to get an interview with the
people who are in the higher system of the company. You get an interview with a
group of people (5persons at a time). They ask you random question. Luckily, I
had a chance to make it to that interview. While I was waiting for an interview
I made a friend who was in the same group. We shared our experience and scores
that we had in our past such as SAT score, school GPA, activities and more. In
my mind I realized that she didn’t have enough experience nor her scores were
lower than mine. During the interview, one of the employers asked her a
question how she made it up to the final level with the beautiful looks. He
thought that all the beautiful women are not smart enough, and told her that
she broke his stereotype. People thought he was joking. After several weeks, I
found out that she was the only one who got accepted in our group.
In my opinion, this is discrimination. Even in the current
society, many people suffer from this kind of discrimination in Korea . This might
be a problem from other countries but since I had this experience in Korea
I targeted Korean Companies. Also, we can easily find this in movies where guys
are rude to unattractive ladies but are very nice to the more appealing ladies.
In order to solve this kind of problem, people should segregate
men and women into separate rooms. For an example, women employers should only interview
women and the men should only interview men. In our society we should reinforce the
law so that people can have equal chances, such as getting caught by hiring women
or men regardless of their experience should be fired by the company. In
addition, I think it’s a good idea if you put 360degree feed backs even in the
process of getting in to the company. The company should add an activity in one
of the processes and collect feedbacks from members. This can provide detailed information
about different aspects from many people. If discrimination were banned in the
company, I could’ve made it in to that company. I wouldn’t have felt so angry even
though I failed to get hired by the company.
I think this is an international issue. Like we discussed in class, discrimination is very hard to proof. The idea that men should only interview men and women should interview women sounds good. However, society will always judge you. We are all human, and we all do it on some level whether we realize it or not. This is why we should make an effort to check ourselves before it happens. I also like to point out that not every one in society is heterosexual, so there still may be some discrimination even you are only interviewed by the same sex.
답글삭제It is terrible that gender discrimination happens when trying to get a job. as you say we all should be given equal chances. For exampl in my country, we all be asked the age at the interview. Companies want to hire new graduate more (usually age of 23-25). it does not matter if they have experiences or not. they want younger people rathat than people who are older and have more experience. Based on this face, I think the system of hiring in U.S. is better. It could have been avoided if there were strict laws for jon discrimination in your country, too.
답글삭제well like we discusses in class about discrimination, its very hard to prove, however i do believe that discrimination is done almost everywhere around the country by all kinds of people. Which is why its not a fair competition, you might really want a job but and exceed the requirements but just because that person discriminates people you might not get the job. So what i believe is everything happens for a reason, you might not know the reason right away, but sooner or later you will find out.
